1997 Cannes Film Festival Diaries
Day 3: Johnny Depp as Gary Oldman

by Cari Beauchamp

Alright, so my review of Oldman's Nil by Mouth was more stream of consciousness musings than a review, but I figure if my mind is wandering that much during a film, that's what it deserves. Since the initial screening, feedback has been coming in and -- believe me I do not come easily to these sexual stereotypes, but women by a large majority say I was too kind and several men have told me it was a great work of art. I will refrain from getting on my anti-auteur soap box, but my personal advice remains Gary Oldman should stick to acting. Still, I was determined to go into the next actor turned writer and director film with an open mind and once again, ever hopeful of finding some movie magic. The Brave - written and directed by Johnny Depp - was screened this morning and I was up early, plenty of coffee, showered and ready to go.
