Ran into the non-hirsute Greg Mottola, director of "Daytrippers"
which is in "Critics Week". We discussed what was up for the day
and everybody was pretty much in agreement that the "Trainspotting"
party was the ticket to be had. Picked up tickets for "Fargo"
and "Temptress Moon" for that evening. Went to the
huge Monoprix
for some grocery shopping - ah, the glamour of Cannes during the festival,
shopping with thousands of blue-haired retirees who are here for the weather...After
standing in line for a good 30 minutes for the screening, it turned out
that the theater was full, so I went up to a reception in Club Unifrance,
the French VIP lounge on the fourth floor of the Palais which is situated
beautifully overlooking the harbor. After drinks with Marc Tessier, the
head of the French National Center for Cinema, and Daniel Toscan du Plantier,
France's premier producer and the Unifrance chairman, I went down for the
Chen Kaige film, which I must admit I understood nothing of.
But, with the Ticket to the "Trainspotting" party at the Palm
Beach in my pocket, even though the film was too obscure for me, I was happy
(and it didn't hurt having to look at Gong Li for two hours). At the suggestion
of some French cinema friends, we decided to walk the Croisette to the party,
which turned out to be a long walk, but Robert Shaye, the chairman of New
Line and the wavy-haired Lila Cazes, chairman of "Leaving Las Vegas"
- production company Lumiere were also spotted walking, so I didn't feel
bad. Upon arrival, we were herded in and crossed paths with Mick Jagger,
who was leaving. Not bad for a way to enter a party. So until the wee hours,
it was a fiesta of star spotting - Robert Altman, Steve
Buscemi, Frances
McDormand, who gave me a light, Liev Schreiber, Parker Posey, the french
director Laurent Tuel, whose film "The Rock of Acapulco" is the
rage of the young intellectual set in Paris, Noel Gallagher from "Oasis",
Dave Stewart from the Eurythmics, Jarvis Cocker, the singer from "Pulp",
Chloe S. from "Kids", Greta Scacchi, and I cannot remember the
others.
