First there was "Michael", and now we have "The Preacher's Wife" which features Denzel Washington as an angel as well. He arrives to help Whitney Houston's husband, Courtney B. Vance. (Too bad she can't find one to help real life hubby Bobby Brown, but that's another story). Vance is having a crisis of faith that seems to be solved by a lot of singing. Every opportunity is given to Houston, and gospel music gives her voice a soulful quality it lacks in standard fare. But all the singing (and the inclusion of Lionel Richie so he can sing too) make for a slim plot and slimmer characters. Neveretheless, if you like Houston, you'll love "The Preacher's Wife". Rated PG.
