"Michael Collins" is the Irish epic that takes the very complicated
history of the establishment of the IRA and makes it understandable. Liam
Neeson as Collins gives an Oscar-caliber performance as well this Belfast-born
man might. It's 1916 and the off-and-on battle for Irish independence has
taken a shellacking at the Easter Day Uprising. Alan Rickman and Aidan
Quinn are shoulder to shoulder with Neeson as the battle concludes. The
cinematography of Chris Menges captures the essence of determination and
despair. Even Julia Roberts doesn't spoil the mood, which is a credit to
director/writer Neil Jordan. If you are an Oscar watcher, you'll want to
see this on the big screen. Rated R.
