This week's blockbuster entry in the ruthlessly competitive summer boxoffice sweepstakes is
"Apollo13," Ron Howard's riveting replay of the nearly tragic space mission. Apollo13
astronauts Jim Lovell, Fred Haise and Jack Swigert may not be fully operational as
characters. But top gun actors Tom Hanks, Bill Paxton and Kevin Bacon play these respective
space heroes with compelling energy and vulnerability. The actual fate of this particular
space mission is well known. No matter. Howard keeps the audience in a constant state of
jitters. The suspense is so unbearable you actually begin to wonder if the Apollo crew can
overcome the rapid fire series of life-threatening mechanical problems.
