Paul Thomas Anderson (Producer/Writer/Director) developed
a passion for filmmaking at an early age and began his career as a production
assistant on various television movies, videos and game shows in Los
Angeles and New York.
After working in a similar capacity for several small independent films,
Anderson wrote the script for a short film entitled Cigarettes and Coffee
and borrowed a camera to shoot the short film. Cigarettes and Coffee
premiered at the 1993 Sundance Film Festival in the Shorts Program II.
From that short, he was able to develop a feature at the Sundance Institute's
Filmmaker's' Workshop. The result was Hard Eight, starring Philip Baker
Hall, John C. Reilly, Gwyneth Paltrow, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Samuel
L. Jackson, which screened at the 1996 Sundance Film Festival and the
1996 Cannes Film Festival. Boogie Nights is the 26-year-old's second
feature.
Anderson recently completed Michael Penn's video for "Try," featuring
Boogie Nights cast members Phil Hoffman, Melora Walters and Thomas
Jane.
Lloyd Levin (Producer), who has worked with Lawrence Gordon for
more than a decade, was formerly president of production at Largo Entertainment,
where he oversaw production of such feature films as Point Break, Unlawful
Entry and Timecop, starring Jean-Claude Van Damme. Most recently, he
executive produced Alan J. Pakula's The Devil's Own and produced Event
Horizon.
Levin previously produced The Rocketeer and served as executive producer
on Die Hard 2: Die Harder, Predator 2 and Used People.
John Lyons (Producer) is a producer and casting director who has
worked in theatre, film and television. His first feature film production
was Paul Thomas Anderson's debut film, Hard Eight . In addition,
for American Playhouse, he produced the television version of Claudia
Shear's one-woman show "Blown Sideways Through Life," which aired
on PBS.
As a casting director, Lyons has cast such films as Fargo, Barton Fink,
Raising Arizona , Lorenzo's Oil , Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, as well
as Armistead Maupin's "Tales of the City" for PBS.
In theater, he has worked as casting director for the Manhattan Theatre
Club and Playwrights Horizons, where he cast such shows as the
Pulitzer Prize-winning "Sunday in the Park With George" by Stephen
Sondheim and James Lapine.
JoAnne Sellar 's (Producer) first two feature film productions
were collaborations with writer/director Richard Stanley: Hardware
and Dust Devil. She then went on to produce George Sluizer's Dark
Blood and Clive Barker's Lord of Illusions. For television, Sellar co-produced
"Red, Hot & Blue," a worldwide tribute to Cole Porter
benefiting AIDS research, and featuring the work of such renowned
directors as Neil Jordan and Wim Wenders. Her background is in
music videos, and she has produced award-winning pop videos for musicians
such as Elvis Costello, U2, Squeeze and Iggy Pop, in addition to
Michael Penn's video for "Try."
LAWRENCE GORDON (Executive Producer) is one of the industry's most
prolific and highly-regarded filmmakers. As an independent producer,
he has been responsible for such box office hits as 48 HRS ., Predator,
Die Hard, Die Hard 2, Point Break, Unlawful Entry, Time Cop and Field of
Dreams.
In addition, as President and COO of Twentieth Century Fox, he oversaw
the production of major feature productions including Cocoon, Jewel of the
Nile, Aliens, Commando, The Fly and Broadcast News.
Daniel LupI, (Co-Producer/Production Manager) whose feature film
credits include Lord of Illusions , Hard Eight and the upcoming Nightwatch
, is currently working on Wes Craven's sequel to Scream.
His television work includes "Pee Wee's Playhouse," "Tales
From The Darkside" and several American Playhouse productions such
as "Lemon Sky" and "Big Time."
Robert Elswit (Director of Photography) has contributed his talents
to a wide variety of films such as Hard Eight, The Pallbearer, The Sure
Thing, Bad Influence, Waterland, The Hand That Rocks The Cradle, A Dangerous
Woman and The River Wild. He recently finished filming the new James Bond
movie, Tomorrow Never Dies.
Bob Ziembicki (Production Designer) has served as production
designer on films such as Jim Jarmusch's Deadman; The Waterdance; Eat
A Bowl of Tea, directed by Wayne Wang; Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story and
Barbet Schroeder's Barfly.
Mark BRIDGES' (Costume Designer) feature film credits include Hard
Eight and Children of The Corn III. As assistant costume designer, he
has worked on such films as Nixon, Natural Born Killers, Dave, Hero, Doc
Hollywood and The Grifters . Bridges has also worked on three Coen
brothers films: The Hudsucker Proxy, Barton Fink and Miller's Crossing
. In television, he designed the costumes on HBO's "Dream On."
Bridges' extensive background in stage includes assisting Gianni Versace
in the La Scala production of "Salome." He received his
MFA in Design at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts.
Adam Shankman (Choreographer) lists among his film credits The Relic;
Congo; Mrs. Winterbourne; The Flintstones, for which he received a Bob
Fosse Award nomination; Don Juan DeMarco; Addam's Family Values; Miami
Rhapsody and Heart and Souls . For television, Shankman's choreography
can be seen on sitcoms like "Caroline In The City" and "Ellen,"
as well as the "Billboard Awards" and "Soul Train Awards."
Shankman has also lent his talents to commercials and music videos. Among
the artists that he has worked with are Whitney Houston, B52's, Johnny Gill,
Stevie Wonder and Barry White.
On-stage, Shankman has choreographed "Patti Lupone On Broadway,"
"Commitment To Life VIII," "Eating Raoul" and a Los
Angeles production of "West Side Story," which won him
the Drama-Logue Award for Choreography.
MICHAEL PENN , (Composer) a prolific and sophisticated musician,
first arrived on the music scene in 1989 with the hit release "March,"
which earned him the Best New Artist MTV Video Award.
"March" jumped onto the Top 40 in album sales and secured
him an avid following. His most recent release, "Resigned"
features a broad range of songs that represent a culmination of
a life dedicated to music.
In addition to co-writing the score for Boogie Nights, Penn also created
the score for Paul Thomas Anderson's Hard Eight.
Born in New York City to actress Eileen Ryan and director/actor Leo Penn,
Penn moved with his family to Los Angeles at the age of two. By the time
he was in Junior High School, he had taught himself to play the guitar
and was in a band.
DYLAN TICHENOR (Editor) reunites with Paul Thomas Anderson on Boogie
Nights, having served as post-production supervisor on Hard Eight for the
director. He has also worked with Robert Altman in a variety of positions
ranging from assistant to co-editor on such feature projects as The Player;
Short Cuts; Mrs. Parker and the Vicious Circle, which was directed
by Alan Rudolph, Pret-a-Porter and Kansas City Tichenor was recently
nominated for an Emmy Award for his work on "Jazz Ô34:
Remembrances of Kansas City Swing."
Karen Rachtman (Music Supervisor) has served as music supervisor
on such films as Quentin Tarantino's Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs as
well as Grace of My Heart, Get Shorty, Clueless, Reality Bites, Four Rooms,
Desperado and Time Cop.
