THE WORLD'S LARGEST MULTICAST WILL MAKE A SPLASH AT STARDUST FORUMS' THIRD ANNUAL IP MULTICAST SUMMIT

Major Motion Picture Internet Premiere Added to Technology Conference and Exhibition

CAMPBELL, Calif., January 11, 1999 - Stardust Forums today announced the third annual IP Multicast Summit to be held February 7-9 at the Doubletree Hotel in San Jose, CA. The IP Multicast Summit is the industry's only technical conference focused on the technologies, business and management of Multicast in IP networks. The summit will be hosted by Stardust Forums on behalf of the members of the IP Multicast Initiative (IPMI) to provide the latest technical information on IP Multicast, an IETF standard for efficient transmission of rich multimedia content from one sender to multiple receivers across the Internet. Keynotes, interactive technical sessions and ad hoc conversations of rich technological depth will continue to be the hallmark of this annual Stardust Event.

"The technology breadth and depth of this year's conference sessions are really mirrored by the Multicast Splash project which Stardust Forums has created in conjunction with Hughes Network Systems, Sprint, Hewlett-Packard, Broadcast.com, Cisco, Film Scouts, the Institute for Regional Education, Microsoft and Real Networks." Said Martin Hall, Chief Technology Officer of Stardust Forums. "The Multicast Splash network is the most advanced IP Multicast network the Internet has ever seen and this year's attendees will have the opportunity to look deeply into the technologies and products that make Multicast Networks secure, reliable and manageable."

With sell-outs in the first two years of the event, more than 750 network engineers, researchers, business people and technology developers are expected to attend the 1999 summit. The IP Multicast Summit delivers three days of intense coverage of the latest trends in research, product development, enterprise and ISP deployment and management of multicast-based solutions.

The deployment of Multicast technology over IP networks has attracted major sponsors to this summit including platinum sponsors Hughes Network Systems and Sprint, as well as gold sponsors HP, TIBCO and Sun Microsystems. Publication sponsors for the event are Data Communications and Tele.Com, both published by CMP Media.

The World's Largest Multicast

In conjunction with the Multicast Summit, next generation service providers and product vendors will showcase the world's most extensive multicast network with a series of webcast programs. This advanced IP Multicast network incorporates and demonstrates some of the most advanced technologies being explored at the summit. Companies collaborating on the network and multicast-based webcasts include: Hughes Network Systems, Sprint, HP, Broadcast.com, Cisco Systems, Film Scouts LLC, the Institute for Regional Education, Microsoft, Real Networks and Stardust Forums.

The Premiere Cafe(TM)

Sunday night conference attendees will gather in the Premiere Cafe to view the Internet movie premiere of Koyaanisqatsi (pronounced koyaniskatzi), and during the week, sessions from the technology conference. High, medium and low-speed terrestrial and satellite multicast connections to the hotel will channel multiple audio/video bit rates into the event and cafe networks. At the cafe, in the exhibit hall and during the conference sessions, event attendees will see and learn about the solutions that enable them to take advantage of IP Multicast in public and private IP networks. And by extending the reach of the event to the largest international audience ever, the summit will effectively demonstrate the broad scalability and accessibility of the technology. The transmissions will be multicast in high quality, high bit rate video and simulcast at lower bit rates.
Additionally, summit exhibitors will be using the native multicast feeds coming into the conference to demonstrate the capabilities of their own products and services. The exhibitor floor will essentially become a special "hands-on" demonstration arena allowing attendees to interactively experience configuring, deploying and managing IP Multicast.

Internet Movie Premiere of Koyaanisqatsi

This year's summit will feature the Internet premiere of Koyaanisqatsi, a film presented by Francis Ford Coppola, directed by Godfrey Reggio, with a powerful award winning score by Phillip Glass. A truly unique cinematic experience, Koyaanisqatsi, which means "life out of balance" in the language of the Hopi Indians, is a film that uses breathtaking cinematography and an entrancing musical score to show the juxtaposition of a technological revolution within a natural world. "This is the perfect movie for the IP Multicast Summit, because it hearkens back to the silent film era in its lack of dialogue and yet it shows the power of the medium and how well it can be merged with the Internet as a broadcast vehicle. This is really the merging of two worlds, the Internet and the motion picture; just as sight and sound merged to give us motion pictures, we are now seeing the beginning of a new medium on a new frontier." said Mayra Langdon Riesman, founder of Film Scouts LLC.

The Summit Conference Tracks
