Ingmar Bergman returns with a tale of a middle-aged inventor, committed to a psychiatric hospital for almost beating his fiance to death. Another patient, Professor Osvald Vogler (Erland Josephson), gets him involved in a film project: The Joy of the Joyous Girl.
