Hai shan hua
(Flowers of Shanghai)

Review, by David Sterritt

The waning 19th century finds Shanghai divided into foreign occupations. In the British concession, flower houses offer luxurious pleasures of every kind and are the only bordellos that Chinese dignitaries may enter. Their rituals and traditions are rich, even their language is unique, and the women who master it are "flowers of Shanghai."
