Arnaud Desplechin's film "Esther Kahn" is the story of a young, Jewish woman living in London's East End in the late 19th century. She has a hard life, working in a sweatshop and gong through the motions of her mundane existence. She is shut off from the world, never showing any emotion or feeling about anything until one day, when she goes to see a play and she gets lost in the performance. She decides that what she wants to be an actress. Through her learning the art of acting she begins to open up and experience life for the first time.
