Cannes Diary #5: The Festival Poster

by Lisa Nesselson

The only thing worse than not having a)Festival accreditation, b) a place to stay, and c) sturdy shoes, the right adapter for your computer, eye drops and infinite stamina ( encyclopedic knowledge of cinema, optional) is the official poster for this year's FIF. At the press conference on April 23rd when the Competition and Un Certain Regard films were announced, my fellow scribes and I were underwhelmed by the sight of scattered film frames against a blazing sun in a pale blue sky. It looks like the rejects from a dyslexic origami convention. Or the place where crumpled Post-Its go to die.

Much as the songs you once despised can evoke nostalgia for the era when you despised them, even the dorkiest poster can seem kind of quaint when viewed years after the fact. You'll have to check back with me in 2008, but something tells me this year's graphic is going to evoke about as much warm nostalgia as the Millenium Bug.
