1998 Cannes Film Festival Diaries
I Think I Cannes #1 (Prelude)

by Jerry (the usher)

I've got my ticket to Cannes and a friend told me about a lawyer he knew who is looking for new talent and will be there and might be able to help me meet some people and get around. I'll call him Mr. Bigdeal. I called him up and he agreed to meet me.

We hooked up in a SoHo café and he laid his rap on me. He's really into new technology, he's a "new media" guy, he talks alot about bandwidth and delivery systems and random-access entertainment and so on. He fancies himself on the cutting edge.

I kinda wanted to talk about my own ideas, my screenplay and casting it and how to convince someone to give me money and let me direct it, but it was hard to get a word in edgewise. So I sat there politely and listened to the guy's rap and nodded my head alot.

He sees himself as some kind of techno-prophet, leading the masses into the golden age of digital and making millions along the way, but I wondered how much this guy really understands about what's going on and what's to come. He sure dropped a lot of names though, he apparently knows all the players.
