Cannes, 15 May 2002 - Slept through opening night (this 12 hour jet lag ...), but reading the "trades" (free special issues of Variety, Hollywood reporter etc. that are disbributed daily in Cannes), it sounded like fun: Woody Allen for the first time in Cannes, presenting "Hollywood Ending", and people in the Palais de Festival actually laughing during a screening (many Festival Films tend to be serious, sad, but cinematographically valuable tales about relationship troubles of a couple of northern Taiwanese peasants (all gender combinations possible). Of course, there was this one writer who compared Woody Allen's current fate with that of Jerry Lewis - who was equally "big in France" at some point in his career, while being snubbed in his home country
