Curiosity gets the better of me, and I decide to call Slick's number in L.A. and see if I can track him down, or at least see if he's OK.

I get the DMI switchboard operator, and say his name. "Who?"

I repeat the name, spelling it. "I'm sorry, we have no one here by that name... Oh yes, I'm absolutely sure, I've got the book right in front of me. But I just started here, so I'm not familiar with the names of former agents."

Wow, like he never existed. From rising star to non-person overnight... What a business. I wonder if I'll ever see or hear from him again...
