Sylvester Stallone is dreadfully serious as "Judge Dredd" but that is how his comic book character is supposed to be played. In the post apocalyptic world, the judges dispense law and order as cop, judge, jury and executioner. Sure it would clear up the back log in the courts, but something is wrong with the system and "Judge Dredd" finds that out when he is wrongly convicted. Rob Schneider gives much needed levity to the proceedings while Armand Assante is a passable villain. But state of the art special effects compete with Stallone for center stage and occasionally they win. "Judge Dredd" is a fast ride that is deserving of the R rating for violence.
