Day 3: A Different Sharon Stone? Just How Different?
Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic, July 3. — Taking a break from shooting Basic Instinct 2 in London, Sharon Stone made a star entrance onto the Karlovy Vary Festival scene. Promptly canceling all scheduled interviews and press conferences, she prepared for the gala evening. Arriving forty minutes late, she introduced Jim Jarmusch's Broken Blossoms (USA, out of competition) and, more importantly, received a Life Achievement Crystal Globe. Emphasize "Life", for as she pointed out in a courageous, though at times rambling, allocution, having a stroke that kept her away for a couple of years forced her to reassess her approach to stardom, her approach to her work, her approach to motherhood and, indeed, to life.
Watching her again later on television (and turning the sound off), observing how firmly she stood while her arms shot up into the air like arrows in a strange Martha-Graham-meets-Pina Bausch choreography, one was struck by how much more of her personal suffering she silently revealed through her demeanor on stage. It was a brave and deeply personal happening.
Later during her stay, looking far more relaxed, she, former president Vaclav Havel and many other VIPs attended a private party at the Grand Hotel Pupp, complete with male exotic dancers (Czech Chippendale, anyone?) and a fierce battle of balloons, with Ms. Stone proving to be no slouch in the balloon-throwing department. What a strange twenty-four hours!
