TWO WEEKS IN ANOTHER TOWN: THE 36th KARLOVY VARY INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL - DAY 11: AN ALMOST MYSTICAL CODA

by Henri Béhar

Sunday, July 15 - ''You come from the Czech Republic?'' says the cab driver taking me from Charles de Gaulle airport to Paris, spotting my Karlovy Vary Festival bag. ''I was Vaclav Havel's limo driver in the mid 80s, when he was a major dissident, after he was freed and before he became president. He'd just come out of jail, and as a dissident writer, had been invited to Paris; I was his driver for a month. I come from Jerusalem and we would talk endlessly about it. Before he left, he gave me a very old tiny parchment book of Jewish prayer in, I guess, Czech Yiddish. I always carry it with me. Here, have a look.''
